Italy has emerged as a key player in Europe’s renewable energy expansion, particularly in the solar sector, where recent data show a strong acceleration. At the same time, structural delays and policy challenges continue to limit the country’s ability to fully capitalize on this momentum.
One of the most striking developments comes from solar energy auctions. In 2025, Italy awarded 7.7 GW of photovoltaic capacity, out of more than 25 GW allocated across the European Union – the highest national total ever recorded. This result places Italy at the top of the European ranking, confirming its growing importance in the solar market.
