Italy speeds up energy transition but remains tied to foreign imports

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy is moving faster toward a clean energy future – yet its reliance on foreign power remains a structural weakness. In 2024, investments in the national electricity distribution network exceeded 4.8 billion euros, with 86% devoted to projects supporting the energy transition. This record figure confirms how vital the grid has become as the backbone of the country’s decarbonization strategy.

The latest data show a nation in the middle of transformation. Renewable sources accounted for 49% of Italy’s total electricity generation, up 14% from 2023, while fossil fuels dropped to 51%. Still, the country’s energy security is fragile.
