Italy is in the middle of a major digital transformation that spans from expanding high-speed fiber networks to preparing for advanced artificial intelligence. This shift is essential not only for faster internet connections but also for boosting competitiveness in industry, services, and public administration. The push toward a fully digital economy touches multiple sectors and requires investments in infrastructure, skills, and innovation.
At the core of this change are telecommunications networks. As of mid-2025, Italy has more than 20.5 million fixed broadband lines, a result of retiring older copper networks and upgrading to next-generation technology. Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), which brings fiber directly into homes and businesses, has grown by more than 1.2 million lines in just one year and now accounts for roughly 31.6% of total connections.
