Italy is making measurable progress in its digital transformation, with small and medium-sized businesses, cloud adoption, digital payments and electronic identity all showing significant advances. New data indicate that the country is steadily narrowing its historical digital gap with Europe while developing strengths that could support future competitiveness.
In 2025, 79.5% of Italian small and medium-sized enterprises reached at least a basic level of digital intensity, compared with 72.8% across the EU20 countries analyzed in a new Deloitte study. The European Commission’s 2026 Digital Decade assessment similarly identifies SME digitalization, cloud adoption and data analytics among the areas where Italy now performs above the EU average.
