Love and laughter between Italy and US beyond the slopes at Milano–Cortina 2026

At the heart of the 2026 Winter Games in northern Italy, two light-hearted love stories have caught the public’s attention alongside the serious side of elite sport. One involves the sister of Olympic skiing icon Lindsey Vonn and another centers on young American luger Sophia Kirkby.

Lindsey Vonn, 41, is in recovery after a crash on Feb. 8 during the women’s downhill at Milano-Cortina. The fall left her with multiple injuries that required surgery, and she spent more than a week in the Ca’ Foncello hospital in Treviso before returning home to the United States.

Her sister Karin Kildow, who stayed at her side, turned some of the difficult days into moments of humor by spotlighting the Italian medical staff in a series of playful Instagram video clips.

In one Reel set to a classic love song, Kildow joked that followers should “delete your dating apps and just go to an Italian emergency room,” poking fun at the professional caregivers’ looks and charm while also thanking them for their kindness and expertise. The video, which shows several health professionals hard at work, quickly went viral and added a quirky, human touch to coverage of Vonn’s injury and rehabilitation.

Meanwhile at the Olympic Village in Cortina d’Ampezzo, 24-year-old luger Sophia Kirkby gained attention for her own off-track adventure in the romance department. Before Valentine’s Day, she used social media to announce that she was single and open to meeting someone during the Games, drawing hundreds of responses from fans and followers. After one admirer reached out and traveled roughly 600 miles from the United Kingdom to Italy, Kirkby shared that they had enjoyed a memorable evening together that included exchanging small keepsakes — her handmade ceramic pin for his Italian police badge — and an authentic Italian date.

The lightness of these moments has stood in contrast to the intense competition and physical challenges of the Olympics, yet both Kirkby and Kildow have embraced the fun side of life at a global sporting event and given fans something to smile about.
