Maserati is returning to major motorsport after announcing today that it will race in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in 2023. The move makes Maserati the first Italian brand to compete in the series. In making the announcement, Maserati called the move, "the first step in its motorsport strategy."
That tease of a line, of course, fuels speculation that the manufacturer is considering a return to Formula 1, where it won Drivers' Championships in 1954 and 1957 with Juan Manuel Fangio. The last time the Maserati name was seen on a single-seat race car was with Maria Teresa De Filippis, the first woman to qualify for a Formula 1 Grand Prix, on board of a 250F in 1958.
