Mayor Sarno declares October Italian Heritage Month in Springfield, MA

By: Ariana Tourangeau

The Italian flag now flies over Springfield City Hall in recognition of Italian Heritage Month. Mayor Domenic Sarno along with leaders of the Italian Cultural Center of Western Massachusetts raised the flag over city hall Friday afternoon. Mayor Sarno read a proclamation saluting the accomplishments of Italian-Americans who made Springfield their home over the years.

He told 22News, as a first generation Italian-American, this observance is very personal to him. “My parents came over from the old country. In their younger days, they survived underground sometimes during the Nazi occupation during World War II. It really puts across what Italian-Americans have done fore the city of Springfield,” Mayor Sarno said.
