In late 2025, a major medical breakthrough in Italy drew global attention with the birth of a baby named Mattia after his mother underwent a uterus transplant. The delivery took place at Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania, Sicily, and marked the second successful birth in Italy following this highly complex procedure. What was once considered experimental is now emerging as a realistic option for women affected by absolute uterine infertility.
The program in Catania relies on uteri donated by deceased donors rather than living ones, reducing risks to healthy donors and simplifying ethical concerns. The transplanted uterus is intended to be temporary. After pregnancy and childbirth, it is removed to limit long-term exposure to immunosuppressive drugs.
