John Scarpati has made monuments and memorials since he was a child. When his older brother, Michael, was killed during Wold War II, Scarpati collected the Western Union telegram that informed his mother of her son's death.
He took the letters Michael had written to her from the frontlines and put them in a glass casing, along with personal belongings sent home. "He lives up there," Scarpati said yesterday, pointing to a photo of the framed monument on the wall of his home. "But he's also in here," he said, pointing at his heart.
