Michele Napoletano, the Brooklyn-born mayor of Airola in the Province of Benevento, last week inaugurated a statue of St. George the Martyr, patron of his town, which was funded by Italian-Americans living in New York.
The mayor says that the outpouring of camaraderie and Italian pride from Italian-Americans who haven't forgotten their roots has lifted the spirits of a town that has suffered since their church was destroyed during an earthquake in 1980.
