Modena and Reggio Emilia strengthen their economic ties with the United States despite trade challenges

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

The United States remains a vital market for two of Italy’s most dynamic manufacturing provinces, Modena and Reggio Emilia, highlighting the enduring strength of transatlantic commercial relations.

According to an October 2026 analysis by Lapam Confartigianato, the United States is Modena’s largest export destination, accounting for approximately one-third of its exports outside the European Union. During the first half of 2026, shipments to the American market declined by a relatively modest 3.2%, despite ongoing trade uncertainties.

American demand remains particularly important for Modena’s automotive, machinery, and specialized manufacturing industries. In the first quarter of 2026, machinery exports to the United States increased by 10.7%, demonstrating opportunities for Italian industrial technology.

Small businesses also play an essential role in this relationship. The United States accounts for 10.8% of exports generated by Modena’s sectors characterized by a strong presence of micro and small enterprises.

In neighboring Reggio Emilia, the American market absorbs approximately 25% of exports destined for countries outside the European Union. Although shipments declined by 10.7% during the first half of 2026, industrial machinery remains a particularly valuable connection between local manufacturers and American customers.

The two provinces represent internationally recognized centers of Italian engineering, automotive excellence, and advanced manufacturing.

Their commercial relationships with the United States demonstrate how Italian craftsmanship, technological expertise, and industrial specialization continue to contribute to American businesses and supply chains.

Despite temporary market fluctuations, these established partnerships provide foundations for future investment, innovation, and stronger economic cooperation.
