Puglia’s centenarians are defying Italy’s stress epidemic

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy is increasingly divided by stress levels, and new attention is being focused on the long-term effects of cortisol – the hormone associated with chronic stress – on health and longevity. Researchers and health experts warn that persistent stress can accelerate aging, weaken the immune system, raise cardiovascular risks, and negatively affect sleep and cognitive performance.

In several parts of the country, especially large urban and industrial areas, anxiety and psychological pressure are becoming a growing public health concern.

Yet one region continues to stand out for a very different reason: Puglia. Despite the broader national trend, many communities across southern Italy’s Adriatic region are showing remarkable resilience, with an unusually high number of centenarians and lower indicators of chronic stress–related illness.

Experts point to a combination of lifestyle factors that may explain the phenomenon. Puglia’s Mediterranean diet – rich in olive oil, vegetables, legumes, seafood, and fresh seasonal products – remains deeply rooted in everyday life. Social connections also play a major role. In smaller towns across the region, strong family ties, frequent community interaction, and a slower pace of life continue to shape daily routines.

Physical activity is another key element. Many older residents remain active well into their 80s and 90s through walking, gardening, and outdoor work rather than structured exercise programs. Combined with the region’s mild climate and extensive coastline, these habits contribute to lower stress exposure and healthier aging.

While stress is increasingly described as one of modern Italy’s silent killers, Puglia offers a more optimistic model – one where longevity is linked not only to medicine, but also to lifestyle, environment, nutrition, and social well–being.
