Rocco A. Carriero named Honorary President of Mondi Lucani association

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Rocco A. Carriero has been appointed honorary president of the association Mondi Lucani APS, a recognition of his long-standing commitment to promoting the identity and culture of Basilicata among communities abroad, particularly in the United States.

The decision was approved by the organization’s assembly and highlights Carriero’s professional and cultural contribution to strengthening ties between the Italian region and the Italian American world.

Originally from Montescaglioso, in the province of Matera, Carriero built his career in the United States as a financial advisor and has remained deeply connected to his Lucanian roots. In 2019 he received the Mondi Lucani award, an honor given to individuals who promote Basilicata internationally through cultural, social, or professional activities.

Since then, he has continued to support initiatives that highlight the region’s heritage abroad. His work within the Columbus Citizens Foundation in New York – one of the most prominent Italian American organizations in the country – has helped showcase Basilicata’s traditions, history, and economic potential to an international audience.

The association Mondi Lucani aims to strengthen connections among people of Lucanian origin around the world. Through cultural programs, awards, and educational projects, the group works to preserve shared identity while encouraging cooperation between communities in Italy and the diaspora. Leaders of the organization say Carriero’s appointment reflects these goals and recognizes the role that individuals in the diaspora can play in promoting regional culture globally.

As honorary president, Carriero will provide guidance and visibility to the association’s initiatives. Although the position is largely symbolic, it also carries strategic value, helping expand networks and partnerships in Italy and abroad. According to the organization, his experience and relationships developed over years of international activity will support future projects aimed at strengthening cultural exchange and community engagement.

For Carriero, the new role represents both recognition and responsibility. He has emphasized the importance of giving back to the region where his family roots lie and of continuing to promote Basilicata’s identity in global contexts.
