Searching for liquid water beyond earth at Rome’s Swim Lab

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

In December 2025, Roma Tre University unveiled a new scientific facility designed to explore one of the most intriguing questions in planetary science – where liquid water may exist beyond Earth. The laboratory, known as SWIM Lab, focuses on recreating and studying ice conditions similar to those believed to exist on the icy moons orbiting Jupiter.

The goal is to better understand how radar signals interact with extraterrestrial ice and hidden bodies of water. The laboratory occupies more than 100 square meters and brings together advanced instruments that allow researchers to simulate extreme environments. Temperatures can be controlled with high precision, ranging from just above freezing to well below –150 degrees Celsius.
