Ralph Fedele remembers walking downtown and into the Order of the Sons of Italy lodge at Main and West Elm streets in the late 1930s with his father, Raffaele Fedele.
Then a young boy, Fedele said they would walk up to the second floor of the former Brockton Public Market, or BPM, where members of the Order of the Sons of Italy Christopher Columbus Lodge 216 met at the time.
Fedele's late father, who co-founded the lodge, also served as its president for 11 terms, he said. "I'd go up there with my father on a Saturday afternoon, and they'd be playing cards," Fedele, 85, recalled Sunday. "I spoke fluent Italian and understood every word they were saying. It was a happy time."
