Surfing history: Leo Fioravanti becomes the first Italian to lead the world rankings

Italian surfing has reached a milestone that once seemed unimaginable. Leonardo “Leo” Fioravanti has become the first Italian ever to climb to No. 1 in the World Surf League Championship Tour rankings, the highest level of professional surfing. The achievement follows another landmark moment just weeks earlier, when he captured his first Championship Tour event by winning the Surf City El Salvador Pro.

The 28-year-old from Rome has steadily built one of the most successful careers in European surfing. After reaching the final in Brazil, Fioravanti earned enough points to move to the top of the global standings, overtaking some of the sport’s biggest names. Wearing the coveted yellow competition jersey reserved for the world leader, he described the moment as the realization of a lifelong dream while emphasizing that the season is far from over.

Competitive surfing has expanded rapidly over the past decade, especially since its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games. The World Surf League Championship Tour brings together the planet’s elite surfers across a season of events held on some of the world’s most challenging waves, from Australia and Tahiti to Brazil, Portugal, Hawaii, and beyond. Consistency across multiple competitions is essential, making the world rankings one of the sport’s most respected measures of excellence.

For Italy, Fioravanti’s rise represents a historic breakthrough. He had already made history by becoming the first Italian to qualify for the Championship Tour and later the first Italian surfer to compete at the Olympic Games. Reaching No. 1 in the world adds another unprecedented accomplishment to his résumé and demonstrates how Italian athletes can now compete for the highest honors in a sport traditionally dominated by surfers from Australia, the United States, and Brazil.

With several Championship Tour events still remaining in the 2026 season, Fioravanti’s focus now shifts to maintaining his position and pursuing an even bigger goal – becoming Italy’s first surfing world champion. Whatever happens over the coming months, his rise to the top of the rankings has already secured a permanent place in Italian sporting history as a remarkable first.
