Tammurriata: music, devotion, and community in Campania

By: Luca Signorini

Describing the tammurriata as a traditional dance is rather reductive, and it only partially explains what it represents in Campania; rather, we can consider it a shared social practice that brings together music, movement, devotion, and community life, even if it doesn’t have a standardized form.

Instead, it takes shape within specific places and occasions, particularly those linked to religious feasts and is often used as a form of participation and a symbol of collective memory.
