The Invisible Maestro: Fabrizio Corona and the Italian soul of the San Francisco Opera

By: Serena Perfetto

There is a moment during an opera performance when the magic of the theater becomes profound and complex. It is the moment when the chorus sings but remains unseen. Their voices arrive like a distant echo that seems to emanate directly from the theater walls.

In those moments, the responsibility for everything the audience hears rests on the shoulders of a person working in the shadows, surrounded by monitors and headsets, just a few feet from the wings. For the San Francisco Opera, that man is Fabrizio Corona, Associate Chorus Master, whose role is a masterclass in duality: partly rigorous educator, partly high-stakes technical pilot.
