Not so many years ago, American opera lovers tended to think of New York's Metropolitan Opera Company as a sort of Holy Mother Church outside of which there was no salvation. Of course there were other ensembles scattered here and there throughout the country, but most of them offered short seasons with restricted repertoires.
This is no longer the case. Companies in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Washington, and elsewhere have at their disposal professional teams that produce stimulating versions of traditional works and that commission new ones.
