Thomas J. D'Onofrio: A Life of Courage and Kindness (1962–2020). As told by his mother

Thomas, lovingly known as TJ, was just four years old when he faced his first big challenge: a diagnosis of low cognitive skills. But TJ’s story is one of hope and inspiration. Refusing to let his diagnosis define him, TJ attended two life-changing summers at Boston University, where he worked hard in speech and reading programs. There, he and his family discovered a community of private schools that were dedicated to helping kids like TJ reach their full potential. With a big heart and a strong desire to learn, TJ grabbed every chance to grow. He surprised everyone with his progress.

When Special Education classes opened up in public schools, TJ found a welcoming new home at Watertown High School. He thrived there and graduated just two years later. It was a moment of real pride for him and his family. After graduation, TJ set out to build a life of his own. Earning his driver’s license, working at the local skating rink driving the Zamboni machine, and saving up to buy his own van, TJ proved that hard work does pay off. He showed everyone just how independent and determined he could be.

At 35, TJ landed a job at Raytheon Corporation, working in the maintenance department. There, people admired his dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to giving his best. TJ even started his own landscaping business, working evenings and weekends to make a little extra money. His drive to succeed and willingness to lend a hand truly show his resiliency.

Sadly, TJ’s journey ended too soon, leaving a hole in the lives of everyone who knew and loved him. The encouragement and care from his special-needs teachers played a huge role in his achievements, and their impact endures in the many lives TJ touched.
