US Ambassador Tilman Fertitta strengthens the bridge between Italy and the United States

U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman J. Fertitta is using his diplomatic mission to emphasize the strategic, economic and cultural ties connecting Italy and the United States, while also defending institutions and traditions that symbolize the long relationship between the 2 countries.

One of his clearest commitments concerns the U.S. Consulate General in Florence. Fertitta described keeping the historic diplomatic post open as one of his first personal battles as ambassador. The numbers help explain its importance – Tuscany is home to approximately 90,000 Americans, welcomes about 8,000 U.S. students and receives roughly 4 million American visitors. Fertitta has pledged to protect the Florence Consulate throughout his tenure and work to secure its future beyond the current administration.

Tuscany also illustrates the economic and security dimensions of the alliance. American companies employ approximately 22,000 people in the region, while Camp Darby, between Pisa and Livorno, remains a major NATO logistics facility, hosting about 600 U.S. military personnel along with their families and local support staff.

During his Coastal Diplomacy tour, Fertitta carried the same message to Genoa. After visiting the Galata Museo del Mare and learning more about Christopher Columbus, the ambassador strongly defended the explorer’s historical significance and the importance Columbus holds for Italian Americans.

Fertitta also welcomed the idea of President Donald Trump visiting Genoa – or sending an official message – for Columbus Day, saying he would work to make it happen. The proposal carries particular significance following the Trump administration’s renewed defense of Columbus and Columbus Day as symbols of Italian American heritage.

On contemporary politics, Fertitta praised Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as a “world-class leader” who commands international respect, while stressing that Washington traditionally remains neutral in Italian elections.

His message is broader than politics – in 2026, the 250th anniversary of American independence and the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic offer a powerful opportunity to reaffirm a partnership built on diplomacy, security, trade, culture and millions of personal connections across the Atlantic.
