Venice has built a temporary bridge to the cemetery island of San Michele for All Souls’ Day for the first time since the Covid pandemic. Tourists wanting to pay their respects to the dead for the Catholic day of remembrance – observed on Nov 2 – can now use a floating walkway to cross the lagoon.
The wooden bridge is 50ft wide and arches upwards to allow water taxis, buses and emergency boats through. It opened on Thursday to allow Venice residents to visit the cemeteries on the island, and to visitors from Monday until Nov 9.
