Vespa turns 80 and continues to shape global mobility and Italian style

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Eighty years after its debut, the Vespa remains one of the most recognizable symbols of Italian design and mobility. First introduced in 1946, the scooter was created in a country recovering from World War II, where affordable transportation was essential.

Early production numbers were modest, with just over 2,400 units built in the first year, but demand quickly accelerated, reaching more than 10,000 units annually within a short time. The rapid growth continued through the 1950s.
