"We love the Italians!"

President Trump has issued a proclamation restoring full federal recognition of Columbus Day for October 13, 2025 – reaffirming the view that Christopher Columbus is a foundational figure in American history: "We love the Italians", President Trump said. Trump’s proclamation describes Columbus as an “American hero,” stating that the nation remains indebted to his perseverance and vision.

Trump greeted Italian Americans with the words “We’re back, Italians,” highlighting the Italian heritage closely associated with Columbus. In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni thanked President Trump for restoring Columbus Day and for reaffirming the ancient bond between Italy and the United States. She noted that both nations intend to strengthen this friendship, aided by the proud contributions of the Italian American community.

Trump’s decision marks a sharp departure from the policy under President Biden, who in 2021 began officially recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day alongside Columbus Day. Biden’s approach sought to acknowledge the historical suffering and contributions of Native communities while keeping Columbus Day in name. Under Trump, the celebration reverts solely to Columbus Day – ending the dual recognition. He has criticized what he calls efforts by “radical left groups” to erase history by removing Columbus statues and diminishing his legacy.

Opponents of Columbus Day argue that the explorer should not be idealized given the destructive effects of European colonization on Indigenous populations – including violence, forced displacement, and cultural loss. Over the past decade, hundreds of U.S. cities and several states have replaced or redefined Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Although Columbus Day remains a federal holiday by law, its observance has declined in many areas, and some states no longer mark it officially. Trump’s proclamation is largely symbolic – a statement against what he sees as the rewriting of American history.

Supporters, meanwhile, say the return of Columbus Day reinforces Italian-American identity and pushes back against narratives they view as unfairly negative. Trump’s proclamation stresses unity and continuity, declaring that “our history cannot and will not be erased.”

Still, Trump’s order will not compel states or cities to abandon their own Indigenous Peoples’ Day observances. The authority to change federal holidays lies with Congress – not the president. Nevertheless, the proclamation aims to set a cultural tone and assert that honoring Columbus remains a meaningful part of America’s national heritage.

In essence, Trump’s restoration of Columbus Day as the sole October holiday reflects a broader debate over history and identity. It celebrates Columbus as a symbol of discovery and national pride – while challenging those who argue his legacy should be reconsidered. The move reaffirms a vision of America rooted in continuity, exploration, and the preservation of shared tradition.
