Paul Scalise immigrated to Omaha in 1940 on the last civilian ocean liner to leave Italy before World War II broke out.
He was only 17. His father — a U.S. citizen who had returned to Italy — sent Paul here so he wouldn't be forced to join Mussolini's army. Instead, Scalise was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Forces, which fueled a lifelong dedication to the United States.
