In the eyes of San Franciscan cinema fans who took part in the closing night of the New Italian Cinema Festival of San Francisco ("NICE"), the protagonist of "The Great Beauty" Jep Gambardella (alias Tony Servillo), has probably become a new Italian icon.
He symbolizes Italy's current transition from its "Dolce Vita" to a future still undefined, yet different from the past. Paolo Sorrentino, the film's director, may well become the cantor of this disorienting time, just as Federico Fellini was in his era. "La Grande Bellezza" triumphed yesterday with an engrossing portrait of Rome's upper class in the face of a changing world, against the background of the eternal city's mesmerizing beauty.
