Twenty four players formed 5 teams to contend for the Fall Classic tournament championship. Captains Vince Colasante, Michele Buono, Cesidio Pellegrini, Fred Rossi, and Biago D'urso selected teams that competed in a double round robin round. The two best teams from the round robin played in a best of three championship round. The Drama began to build as the round robin progressed.
One team, playing against the odds, looked to achieve an undefeated record going into the championship. Fred Rossi, Tarcisio Stella, Vincenzo Buono, and Tony Pesce, playing their best bocce, were able to beat all comers and complete a 5 week, 8 game sweep. Those of you who know the caliber of bocce play and players at our club can understand how much of an accomplishment this was. The right to meet the undefeated team in the championship went down to the last week of play with the Team of Cesidio Pellegrini, Romeo Galasso, Ruggero Scavani, and Leonardo Bafundo qualifying for the final round.
The championship round was played before a large crowd and generated a lot of excitement. When all the balls had been thrown the Pellegrini team emerged as the winners and spoilers of the Rossi team's bid for a perfect season. Hats off to the champions, and all the players who made the tournament a success. The tournament banquet featured a steak dinner accompanied by pasta, salad, shrimp, antipasto, and dolce. The club became a winner as well when the winning team donated their cash prizes to the treasury. The tournament committee announced another tournament, the Winter Classic, will begin in January with an entry fee of $30.00.
