This fall, the New Jersey Association of Verismo Operaopens the season with Vincenzo Bellini's tragic lyric opera,Norma, performed in two acts. Soprano Renata Scotta, known for her performances of Norma in the 1980s, called the lead role the "Everest of Opera" (The New York Times on September 20, 2017).
"Singing the role of Norma is the holy grail for a soprano. The vocalist must perform 'bel canto' with multifaceted singing replete with trills, scales, and more. When a soprano is capable of performing this complex and difficult role, this is like winning the gold cup. The greatest sopranos in opera undertook this role, with Maria Callas performing it the most, said Giovanni Simone, Technical Director, New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera.
"Our professional production will be stellar. Verismo Opera's performance features magnificent sets and traditional staging under the direction of Evelyn La Quaif. A live orchestra led by Maestra Lucy Arner and the Verismo Opera Chorus under the direction of Associate Conductor/Chorus Director Michael Wittenburg will delight and entertain the audience," he said.
Last performed by the company on May 8, 1997, see Verismo Opera's new production on October 28, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the Bergen Performing Arts Center. The opera is sung in Italian with English supertitles projected.
