Mario Lanza tribute concert in Providence this weekend

The Italian-American tenor Mario Lanza (1921-59) inspired many with his "once in a century" voice, including later operatic greats such as Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. Talents of the World Inc. is hoping to keep the inspiration going with its show "Three Tenors from Around the World: A Tribute to the Legendary Mario Lanza." It comes to the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul at 7 p.m. Saturday, then to Worcester's Mechanics Hall for a performance at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Before his sudden death at 38, Lanza was both a star of opera and Hollywood in a way that can scarcely be imagined these days. "That's exactly our vision. Rekindle not only Mario Lanza but his passion for music, which was unparalleled," said Olga Lisovskaya, director of Talents of the World. "He said, 'I sing each word as though it were my last on Earth.' "
