The Federation of Italian American Organizations (FIAO) of Queens hosted the 29th Annual 5K Run/Walk on July 23 at the FIAO Soccer Field at 20th Avenue and 33rd Street in Astoria. More than 250 participants ran or walked in the streets of Astoria, despite the heat and humidity. This event was partially funded by Sussex Bank, located on Astoria Boulevard. The General Manager of Sussex Bank Vito Giannola and FIAO President Joseph DiPietro were present at the much-anticipated annual race. “The first two years I was a runner,” said DiPietro.
“Now I am behind the scenes and happy that we get all the people from the neighborhood and even from Brooklyn, the Bronx and all over. It’s a good cause to bring awareness to fight drug abuse. A healthy mind is a healthy body.” The Federation of Italian American Organizations of Queens is located at 20-12 21st Ave., Astoria, or call 718-204-2444.
