I promessi sposi is both the most beloved and the most hated novel in Italian literature. Required reading in the Italian schools ever since the formation of the Italian nation, it has long suffered from its status as “homework.” The publication of the first new English translation of the novel in 50 years invites us to take a fresh look at this masterpiece.
