The Metropolitan Opera in New York is currently hosting the theatrical production of the opera in four acts "Il trovatore" by Giuseppe Verdi. The production is directed for the stage by the Scottish opera and theatre director Sir David McVicar and conducted by Marco Armiliato. The libretto for this historical performance was written by the prolific Italian librettist and playwright Salvadore Cammarano and largely takes the basic plot from Spanish Romantic dramatist Antonio García Gutiérrez’s 1836 play ‘El trovador’.

The musical explores a compelling love-story between a troubadour and the noble heroine named Leonora. The entire performance keeps intact the Aristotelian dramatic unities – ‘Time’, ‘Place’ and ’Action’ and portrays a vivid depiction of a schizophrenic societal trauma between love, trust, loyalty and rage.
