Life on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, a haven for lost and stranded migrants from Africa, is the subject of director Gianfranco Rosi’s 2016 Oscar-nominated documentary Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea) which shows the uneasy relationship between the native islanders and the migrant families who struggle to establish new lives for themselves.

If you missed the film when it screened during last year’s Santa Fe Independent Film Festival ahead of its December run at the Center for Contemporary Arts, you have a chance to catch it again during the second annual CineFesta Italia, a festival of film and food that starts on Thursday, June 1, and runs through Sunday, June 4, at the Jean Cocteau Cinema and other participating venues. Fuocoammare opens the festival with a 6 p.m. showing, following a 5 p.m. wine and hors d’oeuvres reception at the cinema  (418 Montezuma Ave.).
