Virginia Elena Carta's journey to Duke and an individual national title started with three shots three years ago in central Florida. Duke head coach Dan Brooks was at Reunion (Fla.) Resort's Watson Course for the the ANNIKA Invitational, a showcase junior event that takes place in January.
He wasn't even there to see Carta, and ended up only following her one hole (the 17th) after chatting with one of her coaches. But one hole was enough. "It was the first time I'd ever seen her," said Brooks, recalling that day in 2013. "So it was three full swing shots and the putting on the green. But right then I said, 'She's my No. 1 right now.'
