Doing the family proud with Italian-American comfort food

When you ask Rudy Maniscalco about the marinara at his new restaurant, he's proud to say it's his mother's recipe. "She loved to cook and to feed people," he says. "The first thing she would ask was 'Are you hungry?'  " Step inside Sugo Cucina Italiana, on a lively stretch of Massachusetts Avenue in East Arlington, and you get a whiff of that delicious red sauce.

Maniscalco purchased and renovated the 25-seat space, formerly Francesca's Kitchen, and opened almost three months ago. You can approach the counter for takeout or settle into a seat for table service. There is no pizza on the menu, Maniscalco says, because the town has plenty of joints offering the savory pie.
