Restaurateurs in Baltimore and beyond should take note: Little Italy these days is offering a ripe opportunity.
The news on Monday that Caesar's Den is closing brings the total number of vacant Little Italy restaurants to five raises the important question of what will emerge to take their space. But in my mind, the question is less about real estate and more about image.
It's time for a new generation of restaurants in Little Italy that prize authenticity over the spaghetti houses and red sauce restaurants that have dominated the scene in the neighborhood for years. This is not meant as a slight on the existing restaurants in Little Italy, many of which are still doing very well serving their signature dishes to a loyal base of customers.
