Founded in Rome in 1889 by the famous poet Giosue Carducci, the Dante Alighieri Society has promoted and encouraged Italian language, literature, and all aspects of Italian culture including, art, music, film, history, and design for the past 130 years.  The society was named for Italy’s greatest writer, Dante Alighieri, author of The Divine Comedy, and one of the most admired writers of great literature of all time.

This year the Italian government has designated March 25 as national Dante Alighieri Day, which will be celebrated as well by the Dante Alighieri Societies around the world. This date was chosen because it is the date that scholars have identified as being the start of journey to the afterlife in The Divine Comedy. In addition many events are already being planned for 2021 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death.

The Italian American community of southeastern Michigan is extremely fortunate to have had a very active Dante Alighieri Society for the past ninety-five years.   Membership in the Dante Alighieri Society Michigan Chapter is open to all who share an interest in Italian culture and language.  Membership benefits include:
• Discount on Italian Language Classes
• Italian conversation groups/Caffè & Cultura
• Discounts on cultural events, lectures, and exhibits
• Subscription to Il Mosaico
• DVD Lending Library
• Regional cooking information/Caffè & Cultura

In addition, The Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan is a PLIDA testing site.  The PLIDA certificate is an official Diploma issued by the Dante Alighieri Society under an agreement with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the University of Rome La Sapienza. It is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Labor and Social Policies and by the Italian Ministry of University and Research as a qualification for the proficiency in the Italian language for foreigners.  The deadline to register for the next exam is March15, 2020.  See the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan website for complete details.
