Authorities in Sicily have canceled their loan of a collection of important antiquities for a U.S. tour, upending the Cleveland Museum of Art's plans for a major exhibition set to open in September, The Plain Dealer reports.
The move comes several weeks after cultural officials in the Italian island province complained to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, where the show is now on view, that the prolonged absence of the treasures was damaging Sicily's tourist economy.
The exhibition was co-organized by the Getty and the Cleveland museum, whose director, David Franklin, said he worried the cancellation would encourage antiquity-rich countries to seek higher loan fees and look to for-profit companies rather than art museums to arrange major traveling shows.
