Students thrive in Westport Middle's Montessori program

When young people are in middle school, they are thought to be at the peak of self-doubt. They're restless, can lack direction and don't always have confidence, even as they are trying to find out who they are. "Everyone is so afraid of the middle school years," said Staci Eddleman, principal of Westport Middle School. "It's a tough time for kids."

But the magnet program at Westport Middle tries to help kids become what many students their age are not: self-assured, engaged, motivated and focused.And finishing the second year of the program, teachers, students and administrators say it's working. Westport Middle is the school district's first middle school Montessori magnet.
