The proposed new "Pointing the Way to the Future" Wooster Square monument to replace the controversial Christopher Columbus statue gained a unanimous positive recommendation of a Board of Alders committee. "It's a great thing that they've done," said Dixwell, Newhallville and Prospect Hill Alder Steven Winter, D-21, just before the vote.
He pointed out that the Wooster Square Monument Committee, which Mayor Justin Elicker commissioned to come up with a design for a new monument, had gone through "a very long process with many rounds of feedback" while coming up with designs to replace the Columbus statue, which was removed on June 24, 2020, in the midst of nationwide Black Lives Matter protests.
