Rain-soaked confetti stuck to the green, white and red stripes painted across Common Street as the Feast of the Three Saints saw unprecedented changes. For the first time since the festival began in the 1920s, organizers transformed a two-day celebration into a one-day event because of the heavy rain expected Sunday.
The torchlight parade Saturday night was combined with the traditional procession of the three statues — Saints Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino, which has always been held on a Sunday. "We scrambled and put lights on them so they’d be lit up and everything," said Michael Fusco, president of the St. Alfio Society. "People have been telling us now that we have to do this all the time. People really, really loved it."
