The Italian-American fishing community of Gloucester capped its annual St. Peter's Fiesta yesterday with a procession and the crowd-pleasing greased pole event.
The five-day festival celebrating the patron saint of fishermen included the blessing of the city's fishing fleet by Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley.
The lineup of events, along with boat racing, was highlighted by the Greasy Pole contest off of Pavilion Beach. Brave participants attempt to get to the end of a greased-up telephone pole to tear off the red flag attached to the end, without falling into the harbor.
