Honoring New Haven's Italian immigrants: Artists propose replacements for Columbus statue

The goal is remembrance and celebration and six artists are finding ways to honor the perseverance and resilience of immigrants, mainly through landscape and bronze, whether representational or abstract. Specifically, the focus is on the journey of Italians to Wooster Square in the mid-19th century, their struggles, successes and the legacy they left.

To achieve that, the Wooster Square Monument Committee has been meeting for almost a year and will make a decision this week on which artistic direction best expresses its goals. The dialogue will then continue through detailed design and finally, fabrication and installation in 2022.
