When hundreds of thousands of Italians arrived in New York City on boats 100 years ago, they brought with them dreams of a better life for their children.
Over the following generations, those families achieved great success. But they made sure to remember one piece of advice: Never forget where you come from.
"I'm proud to be an American, I'm very proud to be an Italian," said former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele on Tuesday. Fedele, who immigrated from Italy to America in 1957, joined local residents at the University of Connecticut's Stamford campus to recognize Italian Americans' achievements at the city's first Italian American Heritage Celebration.
