William "Bill" Newman, a resident and veteran who has devoted many hours to recording the histories of people from Avon who have served their country in wars overseas, has been named by the town chapter of UNICO as its citizen of the year.
UNICO announced on Friday that the annual award is going to Newman and he will be formally recognized during a ceremony at the upcoming Avon Day on Sept. 26. Newman is the 18th person to receive the award since it was started in 1998, according to the announcement from the Italian-American service organization.
