Back in October 1980, a monument of Christopher Columbus was unveiled on East Main Street, right near Columbus Square. As listed on the monument, it was dedicated by several Italian-American organizations: the Aviglianese Society, John Cavallari Post, Concordia Lodge 20 O.S.I.A., the Piemontese Society, and Unico National.
Over the years the city has held Columbus Day celebrations, many of them held in Columbus Square right at the monument. Over the past few weeks, all across the country during protests for civil rights and against police brutality, several statues of Christopher Columbus have either been damaged or torn down by protestors.
