The fight to preserve the legacy of 15th century explorer Christopher Columbus in Stamford has moved from the city square to the school board. After successfully staving off pressure in 2020 to remove the statue of Columbus in a downtown city park, a group of Italian-Americans is now fighting to keep Columbus Day a holiday in Stamford schools as the local school district weighs the option of no longer making the holiday a day off for students and teachers.
A large contingent showed up to the Stamford Board of Education meeting Tuesday night to advocate for keeping the holiday as is. They carried signs that read, "Columbus Day is an American holiday," "No school on Columbus Day" and "Please don't expel Columbus Day."
