Upper East Side art gallery Di Donna has launched the first major US exhibition of Italian artist Nuvolo — whose art was collected in the ’50s and ’60s by Peggy Guggenheim, but later fell into obscurity outside of Italy. The new show as curated by Germano Celant hangs Nuvolo paintings alongside works by his peers and influences including Cy Twombly, Lucio Fontana and Alberto Burri.
Gallerist Emmanuel Di Donna explained at an intimate opening night dinner that he first discovered Nuvolo at an auction two years ago and reacted so strongly that he tracked down the artist’s family in Italy, leading to the NYC show. Toasting the show, which runs through Jan. 26, with Di Donna was his wife, Christina Floyd Di Donna, Brooklyn Museum director Anne Pasternak, Sotheby’s chairman Lisa Dennison, Netscape billionaire Jim Clark and former Victoria’s Secret model Kristy Hinze-Clark.
