The Italian American Museum, (155 Mulberry St., 212-965-9000) is presenting “The HeArt of Italy,” an exhibition of original artwork by alumni of the Il Chiostro Workshops from July 6 to August 27. Il Chiostro, which means “The Cloister” in Italian, is an organization that creates art workshops in Italy. This is Il Chiostro’s 22nd year of transporting people from their daily lives to an inspiring location to concentrate on producing their art for a week or more. Every year Il Chiostro Arts Workshops organizes an art exhibit for alumni who participated in one of their workshops in Tuscany, Venice, Florence or Lake Garda.
The images submitted must have been done either while the artist was in Italy, or based on a study or photo that they made in Italy. The exhibit was juried from submissions of original painting, photography, sculpture, drawing and collage. The jurors were Janine Coyne and Antonio Petracca, curators of the Italian American Museum.
The artists, ranging from beginners to professionals, come from all over the United States and abroad. The one link that connects them is that they attended a workshop with Il Chiostro. The 50 pieces represent a broad variety of what each artist feels represents the heart of their Italian experience.
The Italian American Museum is open from noon to 6 PM on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Suggested donation is $10.
