Families with Italian blood gathered outside their homes on Bellew Avenue and Emmett and Boon streets Sunday night to enjoy a ritual they've witnessed for many years — one that defines who they are as a people.

As these longtime residents watched the Procession of Mount Carmel, which started at St. Anthony's Church on Arsenal Street, they talked about how their mothers and fathers took part in the same tradition, and reminisced about growing up in the neighborhood referred to as "the flats.
